Volleyball Updates

Game 1: St. Francis   WIN

Congratulations to the girls for a great win against St. Francis in their first game of the season.  Lindsay Hoop led the Saints in serving in the first game with 8 total points scored.  Jenny played excellent defense and had great passes to the setter.  Rebecca and Sarah showed a lot of hustle and made their serves in.  :)

In the second game, the Saints fell a little behind after a St. Francis server served about 10 in a row.  Emily, Lauren, Samantha, Hannah, and Tori all worked hard to catch up but wound up losing a very close second game.

In the third game, the Saints started off on a roll with Jenny serving and the Saints winning four straight points in a row.  Whitney then had a fabulous serving run, serving 10 in a row to lead the Saints to a 15-2 win in the third game. Lindsay Hoop had an awesome spike in that game.  Congratulations to Savannah Chandler for playing a "perfect game," not missing any serves, making all of her passes and not having any "dropped balls" in all three games.  This was an excellent start to the season.

Things to work on:  serving percentage & hitting

Game 2: St. Andrew WIN

Congratulations to the 5th and 6th grade girls' volleyball team for beating St. Andrew on Wednesday, September 13.  This improves their record to 2 wins and no losses.

In the first game, the Saints were led in serving and hitting by Jenny Shotwell scoring 8 points on her serve, and hitting 2 kills.  Lindsay Hoop served for 5 points in a row and had an excellent hit.  Whitney Letourneau had an awesome game setting and also added a kill, while Rebecca Troast dug up a lot of balls in the back row.  Sarah Roach provided consistent play in both the front and back row while Savannah Chandler again made all of her serves in and hit a sizzling spike to win the game 25-10.

In the second game, the Saints fell behind a bit in the beginning but solid play from Katrina Workman, Kenleigh Clark, Hope Owen, Tori Todd, Sydney Dakos and Savannah Dakos brought the Saints back into the game.  Katrina had a nice dig that went back over the net while Kenleigh and Tori added some nice passing.  Tori Todd was the hero of the game, serving six straight points for the Saints to bring them from behind to a 25-22 victory over St. Andrew.

Improvements:  After much work in practice, the hitting was much better and there were no "dropped balls" in the first game.  I was very proud of the improvement in the girls from game one to game two.

Still needs work: Serving percentage!

Game 3: SFCA  WIN

Congratulations to the girls for another win improving their record to 3-0.  The Saints had an impressive 25-5 win in the first game and won the second 25-11.

Jenny Shotwell got the Saints off to an amazing start serving 15 points in a row.  Whitney Letourneau had a great set to Lindsay Hoop who hit it for a winner.  Savannah Chandler and Sarah Roach had some excellent passes while Rebecca Troast served the last two points to win the first game.

In the second game, Hannah Wherry led the servers with 10 points in a row and served for the game point.  Maggi Mast had a great pass to the setter and Kenleigh Clark had an awesome set.  Samantha Alecho, Sara Vose, and Emily Gear all played great defense to secure the win.

Jenny, Rebecca, Hannah, Lindsay and Kenleigh all had perfect serving games, making all of their serves in the court.

Improvements: Some of the girls made great strides in improving our serving percentage.

Still needs work: PASSING!  We did not make the passes necessary to run the offense that this team needs to run.  We only had one hit the whole game because we were not passing the ball to the setter.  This WILL improve before the next game.

Game 4: Sanibel    WIN

The Saints had one of their toughest matches of the season, but managed to prevail in 3 games.

The first game was a bit of a struggle with the Saints winning 25-18.  Whitney led the team in serving, serving for 6 points.  Lindsay and Sarah both had a fantastic hitting game.  Maggi served an ace and Rebecca had some nice passes.

In the second game, Tori Todd started the Saints off to a 3-0 lead with 3 great serves.  Hope Owen, Blaise Garfall, Savannah Dakos and Danika Thiele all added some good serves and nice passing.  Sydney Dakos had some excellent passes but the Saints lost this game 25-16.

In the third game, Jenny Shotwell took control of the game by serving 14 points in a row to lead the Saints to a perfect 15-0 win.

Lindsay, Whitney, Maggie, Danika, Blaise and Rebecca all had perfect serving games.  Great work, girls!

Improvements:  Sarah and Lindsay's hitting!

Still needs work:  Passing!  We had more hits this game, but we still need more good passes to the setter to run an offense!  :)

Game 5: Providence   Loss:

The Saints lost their first game in four years with a hard fought battle against Providence.  In the first game, the Saints won 25-12 with Rebecca Troast leading the Saints in serving with 9 service points.  Lindsay had some nice hits this game and Jenny and Savannah had excellent passes.

In the second game, we lost 25-20.  Jesse, Niki, Blaise, Danika, Tori and Emily G. all played great and kept the game close.  Danika, Tori, and Emily all had some excellent passes.

In the third game, our serving caused us to lose with 4 of our servers missing their serves.  The highlight of the game was Sarah Roach serving 2 great serves under pressure to lead the Saints on a comeback to bring the score to 13-14.  I was proud of the girls' hustle and ability to play well under pressure.  Congratulations to Whitney and Sarah for making all of their serves in the third game!

Improvements: Sarah's serving under pressure- WOW!

Still needs work: Pass, set, hit EVERY TIME!  Serving percentage!

Game 6: FMCS   WIN

The Saints won this match in two.  The girls did an outstanding job.  In the first  game, Lindsay led the team in serving with 8 points, and Jenny served for 7.  Whitney had some nice sets while Savannah and Rebecca exhibited great hustle and came up with some excellent passes.  Sarah had some good hits.

In the second game, Kenleigh Clark led the team in serving with 4 points scored.  Maggi, Hannah, Emily, Samantha, and Tori T. all played together amazingly to pull off a thrilling, come from behind victory over FMCS.  I was very proud of all of the girls in this game for their awesome spirit and great comeback.

Perfect Servers: Jenny, Whitney, Lindsay, Savannah, Kenleigh, Samantha and Emily.

CFLAA Tournament:  2nd Place

The girls again made me very proud at CFLAA!  This is really a great group of girls to coach.  The Saints won their first two matches without dropping a game, beating First Lutheran of Clearwater and Grace Lutheran of St. Petersburg.  Jenny Shotwell had an amazing serving day, serving for 52 points in the three games, and serving a total of 59 out of 60 serves in for the tournament.  Lindsay Hoop led the team in hitting and also provided solid play and leadership throughout the tournament.  Rebecca Troast and Maggi Mast did an excellent job filling in at the setting position as our setter was home sick.  Sarah Roach added some excellent hits while Kenleigh Clark had great passes throughout the tournament.  Emily Gear played an almost perfect game against Grace of St. Pete, making all of her serves, two awesome hits and excellent passes.  Tori Todd and Hannah Wherry also had a great game against Grace St. Pete.

In the first game of the championship match, the Saints were plagued by missed serves and lost 25-20.  In the second game, the girls rallied with Jenny serving 12 points in a row to get us off to an awesome 12-3 lead.  Samantha Alecho came in at a key point in the second game with the score close at 19-18 and served six great serves in a row to give the Saints a 25-18 win!  In the third game, Savannah Chandler came alive under pressure, making outstanding passes at a key point in the game, while Rebecca Troast made a 5 point serving run to get the Saints ahead 13-11, but Grace Winterhaven came back to win 15-13.  It was a very exciting, fun game and I'm very proud of the girls' effort!

ECS Game 7  WIN:

The Saints won 25-18, 25-12 against an athletic ECS team.  In the first game, Jenny led the serving with 9 points scored.  Whitney added 4 while Lindsay added 3 points.  Kenleigh, Tori and Rebecca all played well to secure the victory.
