Verses & Hymns...

Week 1     The Apostles’ Creed (First Article) with Luther’s Explanation

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. What does this mean?  I      believe that God created me and all creatures; that He has given me my body and soul, eyes, and ears, and all my members, my reason and all my senses, and still takes care of them. He also gives me clothing and shoes, food and drink, house and home, wife and children, land, animals, and all I have. He richly and daily provides me with all that I need to support this body and life.

Week 2       Luther’s Explanation continued

He defends me against all danger and guards and protects me from all evil. All this He does only out of fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me. For all this it is my duty to thank and praise, serve and obey Him. This is mostly certainly true.

Week 3     Hymn    Make Me a Servant

Make me a servant, humble and meek, Lord let me lift up those who are weak.

And may the prayer of my heart always be: Make me a servant, Make me a servant,

Make me a servant today.

Week 4    Ephesians 4:29  Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Week 5   Apostles’ Creed (Second Article)

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

Week 6   Luther’s Explanation of the Second Article

What does this mean? I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary, is my Lord, who has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person, purchased and won me from all sins, from death, and the power of the devil; not with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood and His innocent suffering and death.

Week 7    Finish Luther’s Explanation to the Second Article

that I may be His own and live under Him in His kingdom and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, just as He is risen from the dead, lives and reigns to all eternity. This is most certainly true.

Week 8           Hymn      “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”    verse 1

What a friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear!

What a privilege to carry Everything to God in prayer!

Oh, what peace we often forfeit; Oh, what needless pain we bear

All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer!

Week 9     Hymn “What a Friend We have in Jesus” verses 2 & 3

Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere?

We should never be discouraged Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Can we find a friend so faithful Who will all our sorrows share?

Jesus knows our every weakness Take it to the Lord in prayer

Are we weak and heavy laden, Cumbered with a load of care?

Precious Savior, still our refuge   Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Do your friends despise, forsake you? Take it to the Lord in prayer.

In His arms He’ll take and shield you; You will find a solace there.

Week 10

Psalm 23 1:4 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.  He makes me lie down in green pastures: he leads me besides still waters.  He restores my soul: he leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.  Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

.Week 11    Apostles’ Creed   (Third Article) Luther’s Explanation

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

What does this mean? I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith.

Week 12 Luther’s Explanation (continued)

In the same way He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian church he daily and richly forgives all my sins and the sins of all believers. On the Last Day he will raise me and all the dead, and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true.

Week 13        Hymn “Oh, Come, Oh, Come, Emmanuel” verses 1 & 3

Oh, come, oh, come Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel,

That mourns in lonely exile here until the Son of God appear.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

Oh, come, strong Branch of Jesse, free your own from Satan’s tyranny:

From depths of hell your people save and give them victory over the grave.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel.

Week 14        Hymn “Oh, Come, Oh, come Emmanuel” verses 4 & 5

Oh, come, blest day-spring, come and cheer our spirits by your advent here;

From depths of hell your people save and death’s dark shadows put to flight.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel.

(continued on next page)

Oh, come, O key of David, come, and open wide our heavenly home;

Make safe the way that leads on high, and close the path to misery.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel.

Week 15

Psalm 25:4-5    Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are GOD my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.

Week 16

Proverbs 3:5-6  Trust in the LORD with all your hear and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Week 17    The Lord’s Prayer (The Introduction) and Luther’s meaning

Our Father who art in heaven. What does this mean? With these words God tenderly invites us to believe that He is our true Father and that we are His true children, so that with all boldness and confidence we may ask Him as dear children ask their dear father.

Week 18    Jeremiah 29:11   “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Week 19   The Lord’s Prayer (First Petition) and Luther’s meaning

Hallowed be Thy name. What does this mean? God’s name is certainly holy in itself, but we pray in this petition that it may be kept holy among us also

Week 20   The Lord’s Prayer (First Petition)

How is God’s name kept holy? God’s name is kept holy when the Word of God is taught in its truth and purity, and we, as children of God, also lead holy lives according to it. Help us to do this, dear Father in heaven! But anyone who teaches or lives contrary to God’s Word profanes the name of God among us. Protect us from this, heavenly Father.

Week 21   Matthew 7:7   “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.”

Week 22   Matthew 22:37-39  “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”  This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Week 23  John 3:16  For God so lived the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Week 24   The Lord’s Prayer (Second Petition) and meaning

Thy Kingdom Come. What does this mean? The kingdom of God certainly comes by itself without prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may come to us also.

Week 25   The Lord’s Prayer

How does God’s kingdom come? God’s kingdom comes when our heavenly Father gives us his Holy Spirit, so that by His grace we believe His holy Word and lead Godly lives here in time and there in eternity.

Week 26   Hymn     Beautiful Savior verses 1 & 2

Beautiful Savior, King of Creation, Son of God and Son of Man!

Truly I’d love thee, Truly I’d serve Thee, Light of my soul, my joy, my crown.

Fair are the meadows, Fair are the woodlands, Robed in flowers of blooming spring:

Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer, He makes our sorrowing spirit sing.

Week 27   John 15: 12- 13 & 16-17   My command is this:  Love each other as I have loved you.  Greater love has no one than this; that he lay down his life for his friends.  You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit – fruit that will last.  Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.  This is my command: Love each other.

Week 28        Hymn      Beautiful Savior    verses 3 & 4

Fair is the sunshine, Fair is the moonlight, Bright the sparkling stars on high;

Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer Than all the angels in the sky.

Beautiful Savior, Lord of the Nations, Son of God and Son of Man!

Glory and honor, Praise, adoration Now and forevermore be thine!

Week 29   The Lord’s Prayer (Third Petition) and meaning

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. What does this mean? The good and gracious will of God I done even without our prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may be done among us also.

Week 30   The Lord’s Prayer

How is God’s will done? God’s will is done when He breaks and hinders  every evil plan and purpose of the devil, the world, and our sinful nature, which do not want us to hallow God’s name or let His kingdom come; and when He strengthens and keeps us firm in His Word and faith until we die. This is His good and gracious will.

Week 31   The Lord’s Prayer (Fourth Petition) and meaning

Give us this day our daily bread. What does this mean? God certainly gives daily bread to everyone without our prayers, even to all evil people, but we pray in this petition that God would lead us to realize this and to receive our daily bread with thanksgiving.

Week 32   The Lord’s Prayer

What is meant by daily bread? Daily bread includes everything that has to do with the support and needs of the body, such as food, drink, clothing, shoes, house, home, land, animals, money, goods, a devout husband or wife, devout children, devout workers, devout and faithful rulers, good government, good weather, peace, health, self-control, friends, faithful neighbors, and the like.

Week 33   John 3:5-6   Jesus answered, “ I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but Spirit gives birth to spirit.”
